AGM 2018 CCB

Our Annual General Meeting was held on 22nd November in Doyle’s Bar in Dublin.  Unfortunately there was not a large attendance, and given that the main topic for discussion was the continued existence of a formal society, with elected committee and annual general meetings etc., it might be easy to draw the obvious conclusions.  However, those present had a lively discussion on this and other topics and the opportunity to socialise afterwards.   Click here to view the minutes from the meeting.

A report was given on the current status of the society’s efforts to erect a plaque on the old Welsh chapel in Talbot Street, Dublin – the latest information is available at http://www.welshsociety.ie/welsh-chapel-plaque-update-newyddion-plac-y-capel-cymraeg.  Plans for celebrating St. David’s day in 2019 were also discussed and will be progressed by the new committee.   Following some extended discussions, it was decided to continue with a formal society while the chapel plaque campaign was still outstanding.   The committee will investigate an alternative less formal structure of the society for presentation and discussion at next year’s AGM.

The following committee was elected to serve for 2018-2019:

Richard Morgan (chairperson)
Anne Buttimore (secretary)
Geraint Waters (treasurer)
Gareth Llwyd Jones
Andrew Thomas

Cynhaliwyd ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol ar 22 Tachwedd yn Doyle’s Bar yn Nulyn.  Yn anffodus, ‘roedd y nifer oedd yn bresennol yn siomedig, ac o ystyried mai’r prif bwnc i’w drafod oedd bodolaeth cymdeithas ffurfiol, gyda phwyllgor etholedig a chyfarfodydd cyffredinol blynyddol ac ati, efallai y byddai’n hawdd dod â’r casgliadau amlwg.  Fodd bynnag, roedd gan y rhai a oedd yn bresennol drafodaeth fywiog ar hyn a phynciau eraill a’r cyfle i gymdeithasu wedyn.  Cliciwch yma i ddarllen cofnodion y cyfarfod (yn Saesneg).

Rhoddwyd adroddiad ar statws diweddaraf ymdrechion y gymdeithas i godi plac ar yr hen gapel Cymraeg yn Stryd Talbot, Dulyn – mae’r manylion diweddaraf i’w gweld ar http://www.welshsociety.ie/welsh-chapel-plaque-update- newyddion-plac-y-capel-cymraeg. Trafodwyd hefyd cynlluniau ar gyfer dathlu Dydd Gŵyl Dewi yn 2019 a bydd y pwyllgor newydd yn gweithio arnynt. Yn dilyn trafodaethau estynedig, penderfynwyd parhau â chymdeithas ffurfiol tra bod ymgyrch plac y capel yn dal i fynd ymlaen. Bydd y pwyllgor yn ymchwilio i strwythur arall llai ffurfiol i’r gymdeithas i’w gyflwyno a thrafod yng Nghyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol blwyddyn nesaf.

Etholwyd y pwyllgor canlynol i wasanaethu ar gyfer 2018-2019:

Richard Morgan (cadeirydd)
Anne Buttimore (ysgrifennydd)
Geraint Waters (trysorydd)
Gareth Llwyd Jones

UCD lecture 13/11/18 Darlith UCD

The UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore warmly invites you to a public lecture:

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and developing higher education through the medium of Welsh: the first ten years by Dr Ioan Matthews

 Tuesday, 13 November at 6pm

Room G107, Newman Building, UCD, Belfield, Dublin

In 2007 the Welsh government made a commitment to establish a ‘college’ to develop and enhance teaching through the medium of Welsh in higher education, and in April 2011 Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (which literally translates as Welsh National College, though it has no English title) came into being. Over the next five years, more than a hundred new lecturing posts were created, and the number of students studying some element of their degree through the medium of Welsh has increased in almost all supported areas. Following a recent review the Welsh Government has now extended the remit of the Coleg to include Further Education and Work-Based Learning.

In this talk, Dr Ioan Matthews, Chief Executive of the Coleg since its establishment, will trace the key milestones in the Coleg’s story so far, explaining how it has interacted with individual institutions and how it seeks to map out a national strategy which encompasses the individual missions of Welsh universities. The talk will also explore the challenges faced by the Coleg as it enters its second decade.

All are welcome to attend.

Keep Calm and Carry On 23/03/2017

Next Thursday March 23rd at 7.30pm Aboutface Ireland are presenting a rehearsed reading of a brand-new Welsh play by Melisa Annis, about a middle-aged couple living in a large town in the Welsh Valleys in 2004, in mourning for their soldier son, and the young visitor who changes their world with a mysterious delivery. It’s a terrific new play, funny and deeply moving, which was developed at the NEWvember Festival in upstate New York and now they are presenting with a top-notch cast in the warm, informal setting of the Cellar Bar at the Stag’s Head (1 Dame Court in Dublin’s city centre), as part of their Winter Pub Reading Series 2017. Tickets are just 5 euro on the door.  Go to http://aboutfaceireland.com/winter-pub-reading-series-2017/ for more information.

Happy new year / Blwyddyn newydd dda

A happy new year from Draig Werdd to all our members/followers, and we hope that 2017 will bring good fortune to yourselves and to the society.   We are planning a number of activities for the early part of the year, including our St. David’s Day celebration, which will be taking place on Saturday March 4th in the Hampton Hotel in Donnybrook in Dublin.   This will be a dinner with guest speaker Huw Llewellyn Davies from Wales, so make a note in your diary – full details will be circulated later in January.  We are also making preparations for an unveiling ceremony for the plaque on the old Welsh chapel in Talbot Street in Dublin and will be sending out further details when these have been finalised.   In the meantime we’d like to wish you much happiness in 2017 and look forward to seeing you at one of our functions during the year.

Blwyddyn newydd dda i’n holl aelodau/ddilynwyr o’r Ddraig Werdd, ac rydym yn gobeithio y bydd 2017 yn dod â lwc dda i chithau ac i’r gymdeithas. Rydym yn cynllunio nifer o weithgareddau ar gyfer y rhan gyntaf y flwyddyn, gan gynnwys ein dathliadau ar gyfer Dydd Gŵyl Dewi, a fydd yn cael ei gynnal ar Ddydd Sadwrn Mawrth 4ydd yn Ngwesty’r Hampton yn Donnybrook yn Nulyn. Bydd hyn yn ginio gyda’r siaradwr gwadd Huw Llewellyn Davies o Gymru, felly gwnewch nodyn yn eich dyddiadur – bydd manylion llawn yn cael eu dosbarthu yn ddiweddarach ym mis Ionawr. Rydym hefyd yn gwneud paratoadau ar gyfer seremoni dadorchuddio’r plac ar yr hen gapel Cymraeg yn Talbot Street yn Nulyn, a byddwn yn anfon rhagor o fanylion pan fyddent wedi eu cwblhau. Yn y cyfamser, hoffem ddymuno lawer o hapusrwydd i chi yn 2017 ac edrychwn ymlaen at eich gweld yn un o’n gweithgareddau yn ystod y flwyddyn.
