Consideration is currently being given to holding introductory Welsh conversation classes in Belfast. These will be held in the TURAS offices, in the SKAINOS Centre (East Belfast Methodist Mission) on the Newtownards Road in Belfast. TURAS is one of the four Irish language centres in Belfast.

We are continuing to discuss erection of a plaque on the old Welsh chapel in Talbot Street, Dublin with Dublin City Council. The plaque has been made and is currently stored in the council offices. However, the external condition of the building is a cause for concern for the council committee which authorises erection of the plaque, which has not yet received final approval from them. We will continue to liaise with the council in order to bring the issue to a final resolution and will keep you updated on progress.

Our dinner to commemorate St. David’s Day in Ireland was held last Saturday at the Hampton Hotel in Dublin. Judging from the feedback we’ve received this was one of our most enjoyable such celebrations, thanks in no small part to our guest speaker Huw Llywelyn Davies, who spoke wittily and entertainingly after the dinner and socialised with the guests into the early hours of the morning. The Open University has launched Discovering Wales and Welsh, a 100-hour online course which will give learners an insight into Welsh history and culture and help them to learn basic Welsh language skills. The course is divided into five themes, each consisting of two units which devote approximately equal amounts of time to key aspects of Welsh culture and learning Welsh.
