Welsh in Dublin / Cymry yn Nulyn

Michael Seery is researching the Welsh in Ireland in 1901 based on the 1901 Census, and is focussing on Dublin, as part of a dissertation he is doing for the Open University module “The making of Welsh History”. Most of the focus is on socio-cultural integration and the maintenance of Welsh identity among the Welsh community, looking at comparable studies in Liverpool and elsewhere.  He is exploring occupations, where the Welsh lived, and who they married or lived with.

To augment this he would love to hear any stories or folklore that may exist among the Welsh community in Dublin, particularly relating to themes of identity – Welsh-focussed gatherings or incidental tales relating to any aspect of “Welshness”.  He is mostly interested in the period around 1901 but not exclusively.  Anyone who is able to share anything in this area can contact Michael via email at info@welshsociety.ie.

Michael wrote about the Welsh Chapel in Dublin a few years ago which piqued his interest in this community (https://wideandconvenientstreets.wordpress.com/2020/07/29/the-welsh-chapel-on-talbot-st/)

Mae Michael Seery yn ymchwilio i’r Cymry yn Iwerddon yn 1901 yn seiliedig ar Gyfrifiad 1901, ac yn canolbwyntio ar Ddulyn, fel rhan o draethawd hir y mae’n ei wneud ar gyfer modiwl y Brifysgol Agored “The making of Welsh History”. Mae’r rhan fwyaf o’r ffocws ar integreiddio cymdeithasol-ddiwylliannol a chynnal hunaniaeth Gymreig ymhlith y gymuned Gymreig, gan edrych ar astudiaethau tebyg yn Lerpwl a mannau eraill. Mae’n archwilio galwedigaethau, lle’r oedd y Cymry’n byw, a gyda phwy y buont yn priodi neu’n byw.

I ychwanegu at hyn byddai wrth ei fodd yn clywed unrhyw straeon neu lên gwerin a all fodoli ymhlith y gymuned Gymraeg yn Nulyn, yn enwedig yn ymwneud â themâu hunaniaeth – cynulliadau â ffocws Cymreig neu chwedlau achlysurol yn ymwneud ag unrhyw agwedd ar “Gymreictod”. Mae’n ymddiddori’n bennaf yn y cyfnod tua 1901 ond nid yn unig. Gall unrhyw un sy’n gallu rhannu unrhyw beth yn y maes hwn gysylltu â Michael drwy e-bost ar info@welshsociety.ie.

Ysgrifennodd Michael am y Capel Cymraeg yn Nulyn ychydig flynyddoedd yn ôl a oedd yn ennyn ei ddiddordeb yn y gymuned hon (https://wideandconvenientstreets.wordpress.com/2020/07/29/the-welsh-chapel-on-talbot-st/)
