We have as yet been unable to resolve the stalemate that has developed between Dublin City Council and the owners and tenants of the old Welsh chapel in Talbot Street, Dublin, which will enable a commemorative plaque to be erected on the building. The plaque is currently held in storage by the council, who are however unwilling to erect it given the building’s current external condition (see photo below). The council requires that a section of the external surface be properly prepared and painted for mounting of the plaque, but repeated attempts by ourselves and by the council to discuss this requirement with the owners and the current tenants have not been able to resolve the issue.
However, the building is now for sale, so whatever plans the new owners have for the building we are hopeful that they will co-operate in facilitating erection of the plaque – thanks to the earlier efforts of Draig Werdd the building now has protected status which will prevent the new owners from making changes to its original features. We are meeting with the council shortly to discuss the new situation and to agree a plan of action in order to bring the project to a successful conclusion. We will keep you informed of progress.
