AGM 2018 CCB

Our Annual General Meeting was held on 22nd November in Doyle’s Bar in Dublin.  Unfortunately there was not a large attendance, and given that the main topic for discussion was the continued existence of a formal society, with elected committee and annual general meetings etc., it might be easy to draw the obvious conclusions.  However, those present had a lively discussion on this and other topics and the opportunity to socialise afterwards.   Click here to view the minutes from the meeting.

A report was given on the current status of the society’s efforts to erect a plaque on the old Welsh chapel in Talbot Street, Dublin – the latest information is available at http://www.welshsociety.ie/welsh-chapel-plaque-update-newyddion-plac-y-capel-cymraeg.  Plans for celebrating St. David’s day in 2019 were also discussed and will be progressed by the new committee.   Following some extended discussions, it was decided to continue with a formal society while the chapel plaque campaign was still outstanding.   The committee will investigate an alternative less formal structure of the society for presentation and discussion at next year’s AGM.

The following committee was elected to serve for 2018-2019:

Richard Morgan (chairperson)
Anne Buttimore (secretary)
Geraint Waters (treasurer)
Gareth Llwyd Jones
Andrew Thomas

Cynhaliwyd ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol ar 22 Tachwedd yn Doyle’s Bar yn Nulyn.  Yn anffodus, ‘roedd y nifer oedd yn bresennol yn siomedig, ac o ystyried mai’r prif bwnc i’w drafod oedd bodolaeth cymdeithas ffurfiol, gyda phwyllgor etholedig a chyfarfodydd cyffredinol blynyddol ac ati, efallai y byddai’n hawdd dod â’r casgliadau amlwg.  Fodd bynnag, roedd gan y rhai a oedd yn bresennol drafodaeth fywiog ar hyn a phynciau eraill a’r cyfle i gymdeithasu wedyn.  Cliciwch yma i ddarllen cofnodion y cyfarfod (yn Saesneg).

Rhoddwyd adroddiad ar statws diweddaraf ymdrechion y gymdeithas i godi plac ar yr hen gapel Cymraeg yn Stryd Talbot, Dulyn – mae’r manylion diweddaraf i’w gweld ar http://www.welshsociety.ie/welsh-chapel-plaque-update- newyddion-plac-y-capel-cymraeg. Trafodwyd hefyd cynlluniau ar gyfer dathlu Dydd Gŵyl Dewi yn 2019 a bydd y pwyllgor newydd yn gweithio arnynt. Yn dilyn trafodaethau estynedig, penderfynwyd parhau â chymdeithas ffurfiol tra bod ymgyrch plac y capel yn dal i fynd ymlaen. Bydd y pwyllgor yn ymchwilio i strwythur arall llai ffurfiol i’r gymdeithas i’w gyflwyno a thrafod yng Nghyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol blwyddyn nesaf.

Etholwyd y pwyllgor canlynol i wasanaethu ar gyfer 2018-2019:

Richard Morgan (cadeirydd)
Anne Buttimore (ysgrifennydd)
Geraint Waters (trysorydd)
Gareth Llwyd Jones
Andrew Thomas

Welsh chapel plaque update / Newyddion plac y capel Cymraeg

The status of our campaign to erect a plaque on the old Welsh chapel in Talbot Street, Dublin was discussed at our AGM on 22nd November 2018.  Despite ongoing efforts by Dublin City Council and ourselves, the plaque has not yet been erected due to problems with the condition of the outside of the building.   The external wall has been covered by the current tenant in graffiti-like paintings and the council is unwilling to erect the plaque with the external wall in its current condition.  Despite several attempts, they have failed to get the agreement of the owner or tenant to repaint the outside of the building.

However, the building was put up for sale earlier this year and a sale has been agreed with a potential buyer.  This is currently in progress.  The council and ourselves plan to renew efforts to erect the plaque after the sale has been completed.   In the meantime, the plaque remains in storage with the council and the donations kindly donated to Draig Werdd to finance erection of the plaque remain in our bank account.  We remain in a position to finance erection of the plaque as soon as the condition of the building permits.

Trafodwyd statws ein hymgyrch i godi plac ar yr hen gapel Cymraeg yn Stryd Talbot, Dulyn yn ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol ar 22 Tachwedd 2018. Er gwaethaf ymdrechion parhaus Cyngor Dinas Dulyn a ninnau, nid yw’r plac wedi ei godi eto oherwydd problemau gyda chyflwr y tu allan i’r adeilad. Mae’r wal allanol wedi’i gwmpasu gan y tenant presennol mewn graffiti ac nid yw’r cyngor yn fodlon codi’r plac gyda’r wal allanol yn ei gyflwr presennol. Er gwaethaf nifer o ymdrechion, maent wedi methu â chael cytundeb y perchennog neu’r tenant i baentio’r tu allan yr adeilad.

Fodd bynnag, gosodwyd yr adeilad ar werth yn gynharach eleni a chytunwyd ar werthiant gyda phrynwr. Mae hyn ar y gweill ar hyn o bryd. Mae’r cyngor a ninnau yn bwriadu adnewyddu ymdrechion i godi’r plac ar ôl i’r gwerthiant gael ei gwblhau. Yn y cyfamser, mae’r plac yn parhau i gael ei gadw gyda’r cyngor ac mae’r rhoddion a gaiff eu rhoi’n garedig i Draig Werdd i ariannu’r codiad yn aros yn ein cyfrif banc. Rydym yn parhau mewn sefyllfa i gyllido codi’r plac cyn gynted ag y bydd cyflwr yr adeilad yn caniatáu.

AGM & social evening 22/11/18 CCB & noson gymdeithasol

A reminder that we will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 8pm next Thursday November 22 at Doyle’s Bar, College Street, Dublin 2.  We have a private room booked for our use – light food will also be provided during the evening, so this is a good opportunity to meet and socialise with other Draig Werdd members.

Among the topics to be discussed will be the future of the society – whether we wish to continue as a formal society with elected committee, bank account, general meetings etc. or whether it would be better to go forward on a more informal basis with communication via social media etc.   Please make every effort to attend so that we can have a comprehensive and inclusive discussion on the future of the society.

Nodyn i atgoffa ein bod ni’n cynnal ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol (CCB) am 8yh ar nos Iau nesaf, Tachwedd 22 yn Doyle’s Bar, College Street, Dulyn 2. Mae gennym ystafell breifat ar ein cyfer – bydd bwyd ysgafn hefyd yn cael ei ddarparu yn ystod y noson, felly bydd hwn yn gyfle da i gwrdd ac i gymdeithasu gydag aelodau eraill Draig Werdd.

Ymhlith y pynciau i’w trafod bydd dyfodol y gymdeithas – a ydym am barhau fel cymdeithas ffurfiol â phwyllgor etholedig, cyfrif banc, cyfarfodydd cyffredinol ac ati, neu a fyddai’n well mynd ymlaen yn anffurfiol gyda chyfathrebu trwy gyfryngau cymdeithasol ayb?  Gwnewch bob ymdrech i fynychu’r noson er mwyn i ni gael trafodaeth gynhwysfawr a chynhwysol ar ddyfodol y gymdeithas.

UCD lecture 13/11/18 Darlith UCD

The UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore warmly invites you to a public lecture:

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and developing higher education through the medium of Welsh: the first ten years by Dr Ioan Matthews

 Tuesday, 13 November at 6pm

Room G107, Newman Building, UCD, Belfield, Dublin

In 2007 the Welsh government made a commitment to establish a ‘college’ to develop and enhance teaching through the medium of Welsh in higher education, and in April 2011 Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (which literally translates as Welsh National College, though it has no English title) came into being. Over the next five years, more than a hundred new lecturing posts were created, and the number of students studying some element of their degree through the medium of Welsh has increased in almost all supported areas. Following a recent review the Welsh Government has now extended the remit of the Coleg to include Further Education and Work-Based Learning.

In this talk, Dr Ioan Matthews, Chief Executive of the Coleg since its establishment, will trace the key milestones in the Coleg’s story so far, explaining how it has interacted with individual institutions and how it seeks to map out a national strategy which encompasses the individual missions of Welsh universities. The talk will also explore the challenges faced by the Coleg as it enters its second decade.

All are welcome to attend.
